XXVII MIGLIO The vineyards from which the XXVII MIGLIO (XXVII MILE) is produced stretch along the ancient Roman road that, from Aquileia, led on to the Noricum region; which historians now call Julia Augusta. The road was certainly crossed before the Romans settled, at the time of the founding of Aquileia, but what the Romans certainly did, with their mastery of road construction, was the excavation to regularise the slope between the ancient riverbed of the Torre and the pre-morainic terrace of the ground level, right where the vineyards lie, between the XXVI and XXVII mile: it is the only stretch of Julia Augusta still nearly intact and with the stone walls to contain the lateral embankments, running along the vineyards above.
By this road, Caesar led the legions wintering at Aquileia and, in his “Commentaries on the Gallic War”, he tells “..he quickly came to Italy and here he formed two new legions: when he arrived near Aquileia he found three legions wintering and, having removed them from their quarters, he led them.
Even the writer Livio narrates in many texts of the legions stationed in the outskirts of Aquileja for winter quarters: The historian Strabo wrote: “… The Aquilejesi bring them (to the Illyrian people) goods that come from the sea, and the wine is not less than the oil, in wooden barrels conducted on the carts.”
Erodian, in the life of Massimino, called Aquileja “…densely populated city of Italy, of extraordinary size… on the other hand Aquileja was the great central market, where the people of the mainland resorted for their provisions, particularly for the wine, which was produced in great abundance in the surroundings of the city”.
The XXVII MIGLIO continues a tradition of excellence that, after the Romans continued with the Longobards (we find numerous artistic testimonies of the vine and wine in their monuments), with the Patriarchs, then, and without interruption, until our times.
